Working life

books, booze, health, pornography.

so, i do intend to get around to posting the rest of my cycle diaries sometime soon, but the quick summary is that i didn't make it to zurich. my right knee gave out dramatically on the saarbrucken-strasbourg leg. made me sad to have to give up so close to my goal (about 80%), but continuing wasn't really an option.

so now i am back in holland with a bum knee and not sure what this means for my couriering/distance-cycling future. i may have to stop riding single speed...

but the good news is that i got a non-bicycle related job. starting next week i will be hacking PHP for some pornographers in Amsterdam. no longer will i be merely an amateur objectifier of women.

incidentally, the office is beautiful: a high
ceilinged, hardwood floored loft on the top two stories of an ancient building overlooking the keizersgracht canal.

i celebrated by going to the specialty liquor store and buying a bottle of jim beam.

which brings up the issue of beer: I have fallen in love with Heineken Oud Bruin. This is a problem for two reasons. ONE: it is only sold to the domestic market and there is no exported beer that tastes even remotely like it, but more importantly... TWO: it is 2.5% alc/vol. as such it is sort of a joke beer in holland.

still, it tastes so good that i can't stop drinking it, even though i have to take shots of vodka between each beer in order to keep up (though i may have to start bringing it to my weekly poker game for stealth sobriety powers).

and a hundred thank yous to those of you who have answered my plea for books. in the last week i've received books from kellnerin, misslake and ucblockhead. not to mention garlic, whose deluxe care package was declared by my room-mates to be the best mail this house has ever received.

no problem. by garlic (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 08:10:34 AM EST
hopefully my request made it through shipping correctly, since I was dumb and put it on the outside of the box instead of inside it.

good thing you mentioned it by 256 (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 08:19:46 AM EST
a customs declaration had indeed been slapped on top of it.

are you still coming? by komet (4.00 / 1) #3 Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 08:29:15 AM EST
Thanks to you, I now have a massive overstockage of cheap whisky. Do I have to drink it myself?

definitely by 256 (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 08:34:21 AM EST
but i probably won't be able to until late may. so it will depend on how long you can stare down a bottle of cheap whiskey for.

congrats on the job. Is it a legit (working visa, pay your taxes, counting as a 'legal' worker) sort of job, or less so?

Irony: ammo says it's time. Tom is blocked.

it seems.

sort of like an older, slightly more reserved las vegas.

to be honest, i'm not a big fan of the city. despite having lived less than 30 km from it for the past month and a half, i've spent far more time in Utrecht and Rotterdam.

though i guess that's about the change.

well, at least it's pretty.

i've twice by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #18 Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 11:56:16 AM EST
been in amsterdam on queen's day -- 1998 and 1999. i'm not sure that it will be as wild anywhere else; given the number of people that cram themselves into amsterdam for that, i'm uncertain how there can be anyone left elsewhere in the country. :)

it's a good thing I didn't ask for chocolate. (Actually, it's starting to be the time of year when sending chocolate through the mail is a Bad Idea.) Sorry you didn't get to the big Z; hopefully the book will keep you entertained for at least part of the time before you reach komet and his store of whisky.
