steam beer? by aphrael (4.00 / 1) #1 Tue Sep 04, 2007 at 03:43:42 AM EST
we call it "anchor steam". i've never heard it referred to as "steam beer".

says otherwise. People call it "Newky Brown", or "Dog's", but that doesn't make it "Newcastle Brown Ale"s name.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure it's a misplaced quote mark on my part.

Bottle of dog, please.

Now that confuses the odd barman.

I would be half the man I am today if not for a love of Newky brown at Uni.

Before dog

After dog

that it was reminiscent of Crimestoppers-style victim-and-assailant posters, which, depending on your point of view, it probably was.</Kenobi>

Awesome before-and-after, though; I'm sure we could all find similarly incriminating evidence.

Steam beer by ucblockhead (4.00 / 1) #8 Tue Sep 04, 2007 at 08:37:53 AM EST
Was famous in San Francisco in the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, no one bothered to write down the exact recipe and prohibition killed it. Anchor Steam is named after that. How close it is in taste, no one has a clue.

steam beer is a trademark by R343L (4.00 / 1) #10 Tue Sep 04, 2007 at 09:58:46 AM EST
It is incredibly stupid. It has been called that for at least 100 years and is just ale-like beer brewed with lager yeast at ale temperatures.

But Anchor went ahead and trademarked what was a common term for this style of beer. So we are stuck with "California Common" as the official, non-trademark-infringing name.
